Canggu is currently one of the most sought after corners in Bali and primarily known for its brilliant surf spots.
Although the area is becoming more and more popular year after year, you can still find a lot of local life and numerous beautiful rice fields here. Fortunately, it is still years away from entirely touristic corners like Seminyak or Kuta.
Bali Canggu - the hotspot for surfers
While spending time in Bali, Canggu is one of the most beautiful corners on this beautiful island. There you are offered the perfect mix of culture, adventure, and relaxation.
So that you know directly on your trip to Canggu what you shouldn’t miss there, we have put together a few of the most important things for you.
Here we have selected our top 6 things you should do while visiting Canggu, Bali.
Enjoy the delicious Nasi Campur
Nasi Campur is our absolute favorite dish in Bali. Especially in Canggu, there are a lot of warungs that specialize in it. The unique thing about Nasi Campur is that there can be 1000 dishes in one.
The only main ingredient is rice. You can choose everything else that you want on your plate. Most Warungs offer an extensive and delicious selection: potatoes, sate skewers, yellow curry, egg, fried shrimps, spicy vegetables, and many, many other things.
Just put what you want on your plate, and you will experience a pretty brilliant taste explosion.
Because Nasi Campur is always different, it doesn’t get boring that quickly. We eat Nasi Campur frequently as each time had something different on our plate apart from the rice.
Besides, it is cheap if you go to a local warung not designed for tourists & tourism. A proper portion then costs around 20,000-30,000 rupiah (approx. 2-3 USD).
Learn to Surf in Canggu
Canggu is currently the surfer hotspot on Bali! On the many beautiful but dark sandy beaches, you will find providers who rent surfboards everywhere. Batu Bolong Beach, in particular, has the largest selection, but it is also the busiest in the water.
In terms of price, the rental fee for a surfboard per session ranges between 40,000 and 50,000 rupiah, which is the equivalent of around 4 USD. If you want to rent a surfboard for a whole day, the price is usually approximately 100,000 rupiah (approx. USD 7).
If you have no surfing experience yet, we can only advise you to get a surf instructor. What a surf instructor demands per session is very different, and a few negotiation skills are also required.
Generally, the price is between 300,000 and 350,000 rupiahs (USD 23 – 30). You can also find surf instructors on all beaches in Canggu, but better to book online to get the best rates
3. Spend a Sunday evening with the locals at Pererenan Beach
Pererenan Beach is one of the westernmost beaches in Canggu, and every Sunday, the locals meet here to celebrate a little with their families, enjoy the sunset and eat tasty at the small stalls at unbelievably low prices.
As a tourist, you pay more than the locals here, but it’s still cheap. For example, several spring rolls with sauce cost 10,000 rupiahs (approx. 70 cents). And you can also get the very popular Tipat Tahu or lumpia for 10,000 Indonesian rupiah.
It is nice to get a little bit of the real-life of the Balinese. If you are always lovely and friendly, it may even be perfect that you are invited by a family to eat on the beach with them. Beautiful!
If you haven’t stayed in Canggu, some tours take you to Ubud, waterfalls, rice fields, and at the end also to Canggu at sunset.
4. Get tattooed for free at Deus Ex Machina
In the restaurant and cafe Deus Ex Machina, there is one of the freshest specials we have ever seen in a restaurant every Tuesday. It’s called “Taco and Tattuesday,” and you can get a tattoo here for free.
However, there are also a few requirements that you must meet:
– You can only get something stung if you order something to eat on site
– Your desired motif should not last longer than 20-25 minutes. So choose something small
– Pay attention to the staff who will put up a board at some point during the evening. If that happens, you have to be quick and sign up immediately. There are only a limited number of places and therefore also tattoos that are stung every evening
If the tattoo still doesn’t work, it’s only half as bad. First, the special is repeated every Tuesday, and you always get a new chance. Second, the food at Deus Ex Machina is excellent, even without a tattoo.
5. Dance to the best electro on Echo Beach
Do you like to go partying, and especially beach parties are your thing? Then you should take a detour to Echo Beach.
There is always a lot going on here, especially on Fridays and Sundays, and there is no stopping here after midnight at the latest. Dancing to perfect beats on the beach and drinking a cool Bintang is something extraordinary!
Incidentally, entry is free, as the site is not closed off and is therefore accessible to everyone. A beer costs 30,000 IDR (approx. 2.5 USD), and there are also lots of cocktails to buy. Also, entire wooden towers are lit at a party here, which contributes a large part to the ingenious atmosphere.
6. Eat in the Dandelion with bouncing rabbits
The Warung Dandelion is one of the best and most beautiful restaurants with local cuisine in Canggu. Don’t be put off by the rather splendid sight and the excellent staff.
The prices are still pretty low, and the location is fantastic. You either sit here in a beautiful garden, with enchanting tables and great flair or in the very lovingly decorated entrance area.
For us, the Dandelion was one of the biggest surprises in Canggu, and we cannot recommend it to you just because of the excellent price-performance ratio. Here the whole package is just right, and you can see how much love has been put into this restaurant.
And if I need to rest, what do I do?
Then we can only recommend the small neighboring island of Nusa Penida. There is no tourism here yet as in Hotels and accommodation, just a very few selections compared to central Island Bali. Most travel to Nusa Penida on a day tour, but you can see a stunning nature, deserted beaches, and a lot of Indonesian cultures. It is one of our greatest highlights that we have seen so far. Or, if you don’t want it to be quite calm and adventurous, how about Nusa Lembongan?
